Microsoft has made its Office office app free on mobile devices, shortly after Dropbox made it possible to edit and store documents.
Microsoft has changed its strategy and made its office app available for free on iOS and Android mobile devices. Starting today, you don't need an Office 365 subscription to edit and store Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files on your tablets and smartphones.
The surprising move came shortly after Microsoft abandoned its OneDrive cloud storage plan and instead signed a deal with competitor Dropbox. This means that users can upload and edit Office documents to Dropbox from within the app, just as files uploaded to Dropbox are also available from the Office app. This way, we can continue the work we've started anywhere, on any device.
Dropbox is also working to make the functions of the office application available on its web interface, and the app will also appear on Windows Phones.

As part of the strategy change, the new Office app can be downloaded from the Apple Store from today, through which we can upload our files to Dropbox and edit them there, without paying Microsoft a single forint for it. The new application will only be available in the Google Play app store later, and the Redmond company's specialists are still working on its development.
"We wanted to transfer the user experience we have achieved so far on the web interface to a mobile app so that our customers can work effectively on all the devices they use," Michael Atalla, Microsoft's head of marketing, told The Verge.
The app will only be free for individuals, business customers will still need an Office 365 subscription to be able to edit documents saved in OneDrive and Dropbox. As with the subscription, additional features will still be available.
